How quickly do you really type? A lot of people guess their speed is much higher than it really is. Most people type about 40 words per minute, but if you work on a computer all day, you probably type between 50 and 80 words per minute. A typing speed test tells you your real number, and honestly, it's kind of fun to try to beat your score.
Last week, I tested myself and got 78 WPM with 96% accuracy. Not bad, but I've seen developers get to 100+ without much trouble.

To get WPM, you count the number of characters typed, divide that by five (the average word length), and then adjust for time. Speed is important, but so is accuracy. If you type 90 words per minute with 80% accuracy, that means you make mistakes every few words, which slows you down because you have to go back and fix them.
What's a good speed for typing? It depends on what you do, but here's a rough breakdown: 30–40 WPM—casual, hunt-and-peck style. Good for personal use. Average speed is 40 to 60 words per minute.
Most office jobs are fine with this. Above average: 60–80 WPM. You're keeping up with what you're thinking. 80 to 100 words per minute is fast. You can quickly write emails and documents.

There is a reason for the home row. If you use two fingers, a huge ceiling is stopping you. Don't look at the keyboard anymore. This is the hardest habit to break, but it has the biggest effect.
